About CEREC® crowns

Below is a quick overview of CEREC crowns, including what they are, how they work, and what the treatment entails. This information may be useful to individuals looking into their dental restoration options.

What are CEREC crowns?

CEREC crowns are the chairside economical restoration of esthetic ceramics as it relates to dental crowns, often referred to as caps. CEREC crowns offer the same goal as traditional crowns do, however, they are crafted much differently. Instead of being created in a dental lab over the course of a couple of weeks, CEREC crowns are typically made in a dentist's office in just one appointment.

CEREC crowns, like traditional ones, are used to address dental imperfections or damage. When a tooth becomes cracked, chipped, or decayed, a dentist will recommend a crown — especially if the damage is severe. In other scenarios, crowns are used to address stains, size issues, or white spots.

How do CEREC crowns work?

CEREC crowns work by offering patients an immediate solution that does not require long wait times or physical impressions. The crowns are made using CAD/CAM technology, which stands for computer-aided design/manufacturing. Instead of taking physical impressions, the dentist can use special CEREC technology to take digital impressions, which are similar to photographs.

To start the appointment, the dentist will clean the patient's tooth to ensure that it is properly prepared for restoration. Cleaning also involves the removal of the decayed or damaged parts of the tooth. Next, the CEREC machine will be used to photograph all angles of the tooth. The images/impressions are then used by the CEREC machine to carve the internal block of ceramic to create the dental crown. After a few minutes, the CEREC crown will be ready for placement.

What to expect

Individuals that are preparing to have CEREC crowns placed should expect to spend up to two hours at the dentist's office, however, typically no more than that. Outlined below are a few other things to expect from a CEREC crown procedure:

  • A quick recovery as dental crown placement is not invasive
  • Little to no discomfort
  • No awkwardness from physical impressions as digital ones are taken with the CAD/CAM technology
  • A long-lasting dental restoration that looks natural
