Why Do You Need to Drink More Water to Protect Your Teeth?

Drinking water does more than quench your thirst. It is vital to keep you healthy and helps regulate body functions. Water is also essential for your dental health too.

Water for Your Body

The human body is made up of 60% water. Our body loses water during the day through sweating, urination, etc. It is essential to replace lost water since it improves digestion, reduces dehydration, and replenishes your skin, among other things.

How Does Water Protect Your Teeth?

Prevents Dry Mouth

Saliva is made up of 95% water, which is why water is so vital for dental health. Saliva aids in the cleaning of teeth and the maintenance of oral balance.

A dry mouth occurs when there is not enough saliva to keep your mouth hydrated. This makes it difficult to swallow and digest food.  Loss of taste and oral diseases such as gingivitis can also be caused by dry mouth.

Reduces Tooth Decay

Minerals in tooth enamel are lost when tooth decay occurs. Fluoridated water helps in the remineralization of teeth.

Keeps Your Mouth Clean

Sugary and sticky foods attach to your teeth and provide bacteria with sustenance. Acid is produced by these bacteria, which break down the enamel. Water aids in the removal of food particles and residues.

Helps Lower the pH Level of the Mouth

The pH of saliva should be between 6.2 and 7.6. Acidic beverages reduce the pH of your saliva to 5.5, thereby wearing off the enamel. Maintain a healthy pH by staying hydrated.

How to Improve Your Water Intake

  • The amount of water intake differs from person to person. Harvard health suggests four to six cups of water for a healthy person. Below are a few suggestions to improve your water intake:
  • Drink a glass of water before your meals: A glass of water 30 minutes before your meal helps to improve digestion and promotes weight loss.
  • Consume a water-rich diet: Make sure to add vegetables and fruits rich in water to your diet. Watermelon and cucumber contain around 90% water.
  • Add flavors to your water: In case you find it challenging to sip water through the day, start by consuming lemon-flavored water with a hint of mint or basil.
